Where to start?
1- PLANNING
Start by defining the purpose of the photograph. What do you want to “sell” with the photo? If it is a bridal production, for example, choose a cleaner background, and a softer shade, think about the hair that the model will use, the accessories, etc. Define a concept for photography as a whole.
2- THE BACKGROUND
Watch the background of the photograph. He shouldn’t be more flashy than the model.
For makeup photography I recommend that you use a uniform background, that composes the photo but that does not attract more attention than the production itself. Avoid photos in environments with a lot of information in the background.
If you don’t have a special background, use a white wall, it looks clean and beautiful.
2- THE DETAILS
Take care of all the details. From the model’s earring to the clothes she will be wearing. An earring that is too big can end up stealing the scene and overshadowing her makeup.
If you are not going to use a dress or a look for the production, ask the model to go in a plain black blouse with the collar showing, this will allow you to explore this area with an illuminator, which greatly values the production.
Another option is to use a hobby to cover clothes and create an air of “making-of” that is super elegant.
3- THE EQUIPMENT

04- THE LIGHTING
Lighting is a determining factor in the quality of makeup photography. It is important to have a quality light, with high IRC (Color Rendering Index) to ensure color fidelity in the makeup photo.
I recommend the use of an LED board (I recommend the Yongnuo YN-600L II Sun Gun 600-LED Illuminator) or the Ring Light of the same brand (Yongnuo YN308 Led Ring Light Kit).
5- THE ANGLE
Explore angles that value both the model’s beauty and the makeup technique performed.
For example: For a more elongated makeup, a more lateral angle (semi-profile) will enhance more. If it is a cut crease, a more frontal photo will be more attractive.
6- POST-PRODUCTION
To do or not to do post-production?
This is a personal choice. My tip is: Be ethical in post-production.
You can improve the color, sharpness, contrast and subtly smooth out some area of the photo to make the photo more attractive and thus publish a more commercial photo.
Remember, if you decide to treat the photo, don’t manipulate the makeup.
